Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon yesterday, the deadliest since the June ceasefire, killing at least 11 people, including three minors, in an action Beirut described as a 'massacre'. The strikes targeted the towns of Ansar and Deir al Zahrani.
In Ansar, seven people were killed, including a Hezbollah commander and his family, according to Israel. In Deir al Zahrani, four others were killed and 17 wounded, as reported by the Lebanese Health Ministry via the NNA news agency. Rescue teams were searching for survivors and bodies.
The Guardian, citing Lebanese firefighters, reported that Israel deliberately started forest fires in the south, extending its offensive against agricultural lands that are vital to residents' livelihoods. Residents of Zawtar al-Sharqiya told NNA that about 600 olive trees were uprooted after Israeli incursions.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attacks, saying they undermine efforts to stabilize the south. President Joseph Aoun called them 'a clear message to the negotiation path and to American efforts to implement the agreement'.
Hezbollah said the attacks 'will receive an appropriate response' and called on the Lebanese state to find ways to stop 'this aggression' rather than pursuing direct talks with Israel, abandoning 'the humiliating path of negotiations'. The group also accused the United States of being a partner in Israel's crimes.
